Tokyo 2020 podiums to be made of recycled plastic
TOKYO (Reuters) – Medalists at next year’s Summer Olympics will climb onto podiums made from plastic waste collected from local households or even the ocean, Tokyo 2020 organizers said on Tuesday.
From June 13, collection boxes could be set up at greater than 2,000 outlets of local supermarket chain AEON for residents to deposit any unwanted plastic items for your podiums project, organizers said.
They desire to collect nearly 45 tonnes of plastic to help make the approximately 100 podiums needed in view of next summer’s showpiece, the course notes said. It would be in the beginning Olympic podiums were made from recycled material.
Organizers have sought to border the Games as good for the environment and a mechanism to bring about sustainable changes in Japan, which, along with the United States, just didn’t sign on within the G7’s ocean plastics charter in 2019 .
The medals in the Games are usually forged from recycled metal collected from old mobiles and other gadgets, while the uniforms to become worn by runners through the torch relay will be partially comprised of recycled plastic bottles.
